VIII Demospaz Research Seminar: “Challenges facing democracy and governance: engagement and citizenship”, 19th of April 2018, Madrid
Descripción: During this seminar we tried to find answers to key issues, such as how we define democracy and how far it is linked to what is know as the nation-state. We also discussed how far we must advance in the achievement of democracy as we face current challenges such as the loss of power of States or the alarming weakening of the protection of human rights. In addition, during the seminar we also talked about participatory democracy, the participatory processes and the engagement, and we outlined some interesting dilemas related to the organization of assemblies and the role people play in these. We asked ourselves: “how far are they democratic?” Lastly, we also explored the topic of voting and the dilema of democratic representation and the division of powers.
Speakers: Antonio Rovira, Professor of Constitutional Law, Director of the Master in Governance and Human Rights at the Faculty of Law of the Autonomous University of Madrid and Tomás Rodríguez Villasante, Emeritus Professor of Political Science and Sociology at the Complutense University in Madrid.
