The research seminar “Art, social transformation and human rights” took place on December 13, 2018, at Plaza Mayor UAM. The event was organized by the DEMOSPAZ Institute.

Speakers:

Daniel Lagarto Fernández, Photographer, social communicator and educator. Member of Peace Culture Foundation. Visiting Professor, Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights. Rutgers University (USA), and Laura Alonso Cano, Co-founder of the Feminist Theater Laboratory “La Lavadora”; and co-author of the book “1325 women weaving peace”.

Daniel Lagarto stressed the importance of telling our own history through art. He treated the four types of manifestation in which art can inform and help eradicate violence among other things; education through art, participatory art forms, works focused on artist and community-based ones.

Laura Alonso, on the other hand, spoke about the theater laboratory “Como me pone la lavadora”, where the Human Rights of women are put in a lot of humor. He defined art as the human experience of freedom, of the reality we experience every day that also serves to denounce and create new symbols.
